Narrated Horse-drawn Trolleys

For more information please call us. (805)794-8958 or fill out the contact us form.

The Solvang Trolley, also known as The Honen ("The Hen" in Danish), was introduced when Axel Nielsen hired Chris Kleebo to build a motorized, Danish-style Streetcar in 1964 that would pick up shoppers from the Solvang Lutheran Home to take them to Nielsen's Market. He would also deliver groceries around the Santa Ynez Valley. In 1973, H.H.H. Rasmussen took over the trolley and made it available to Solvang visitors, giving tours of the Danish town pulled by two horses.

Throughout the years, the company has grown to offer a variety of horse-drawn carriage services appropriate for almost any occasion. We offer a quaint, charming way to enjoy the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley that is relaxing, and in many ways, romantic.

We are also available for various private events on location throughout the Santa Barbara County.

The Trolley boards passengers regularly outside of the Visitor's Center on Copenhagen St. and Second St. and takes them on a 25 minute tour throughout the Downtown Area of Solvang. Passengers rediscover the architecture and attractions of the town on a replica of an 1800's Danish streetcar.

Tour guides tell the history of Solvang, explain the origin and significance of many sights and buildings, and share with visitors folk tales and cultural notes from Denmark. They provide, as well, an insight on activities in town and give general information about the area.

FAQ

What sights do we see?
We will ride down Copenhagen Street to second Street, continue to Oak Street and then turn left onto Alisal Road and left again on Copenhagen drive.

How much does it cost for children under five (5)?
Children under the age of 3 may ride free of charge but depending upon available seating may need to ride on the lap of a parent. For those of you not wanting to hold your child in your lap for the tour we recommend purchasing a children’s ticket thereby reserving them a seat.

Can we eat and drink on the trolleys?
Coffee cups with lids, and bottled water are generally allowed on the trolley. We do ask that adults with young children hold their child’s drink to help eliminate accidental spills. Please be sure to remove your trash when you exit the trolley. Dairy products (excluding infant formula), food and snacks are strictly prohibited aboard the trolley.

Are the trolleys heated?
No. Solvang has a very temperate climate and days are usually shirt sleeve weather.

Are the trolleys air-conditioned?
No, the trolley is cooled by natural air flow.

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?
No.

We are walk in based, on first come first served.

Does the trolley stop and let individuals off to tour different sights?
Yes. We make a stop at "The Little Mermaid" (La Sirenita) Restaurant.

Passengers Can get off at this location.

Are there bathrooms on the trolley?
Unfortunately, we do not have any bathroom facilities aboard the trolley. We also will not be making any stops during the tour, so please use the bathroom beforehand. Public restrooms facilities are available at the departure point.

Can we sit together?
Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The trolley is generally open for seating 15 minutes before departure time. We recommend boarding for your tour as early as possible to ensure seat selection. To “hold” a seat next to you for someone else, you must be present.

Where does the tour end?
The tour concludes at the same place it starts in near the Solvang Visitor Information Center, on Copenhagen Drive.

Can I take photos?
Taking photographs is encouraged. Enjoy!

Are the trolleys equipped for the handicapped?
Due to the age and authenticity of the trolleys they are not currently A.D.A equipped. Since the company strives to make its services available to everyone, newer equipment added to the fleet will be A.D.A equipped. In the interim, the driver will help you get onto the trolley and assist you in any way s/he can.
